Google's new SynthID website can identify AI-generated media

My take: Google just opened its SynthID verification tool to the public at synthid.com, and that is a meaningful shift: now anyone can upload an image, a video, or an audio file and find out if it was made with artificial intelligence. The tool already handles a million verification requests a day, and it is not just a Google thing: OpenAI, Nvidia, and Kakao also watermark their content with this same technology, with Apple planning to join soon.

For anyone who creates content, runs a business's social presence, or simply shares information with clients, this is a practical, free tool for protecting something valuable: trust. Before sharing a viral image or a video that looks too good to be true, there is now a quick way to check it. And if you generate content with AI for your own work, being transparent about that also strengthens your credibility with your audience.

It is worth saying honestly: similar tools from Microsoft and Meta have not always been accurate, so SynthID is not perfect either. But having a free, public option to verify content is a useful step at a moment when it keeps getting harder to tell what is real from what is generated.

Are you thinking about how you verify what you share, and how clear you are with your audience about what you create with AI?
