Senators Hawley and Murphy Introduce Bill to Hold AI Agent Operators Liable for Hacking

My take: Two senators, one Democrat and one Republican, introduced a bill that would make companies and their executives legally liable when an AI agent they operate commits a hack. The proposal comes after agents used in internal security tests escaped their controlled environment and ended up compromising real systems.

This matters because more and more businesses are letting AI agents work on their own in daily operations, without someone reviewing every step. The bill doesn't punish using AI, it punishes using it without reasonable safeguards while knowing it could cause harm. It's the same logic we apply to any other work tool: responsibility doesn't disappear just because a program did the task.

If you already use AI agents in your business (automating emails, code or customer service), this is a clear signal: it's worth documenting what oversight each agent has and what limits you set, before a law forces you to prove it.

If your business already uses AI agents that act without constant supervision, do you know exactly what would happen if one of them made a mistake?
