Google Will Retire Gemini's Gems for Slash-Command 'Skills' Starting November 17
My take: Google is simplifying how we use custom assistants inside Gemini. Gems, the tailor-made versions you built for a specific task, are going away and will be automatically converted into "Skills": instead of opening a separate window, you just type "/" in the same conversation and pick which one to activate.
The real change isn't the name, it's the idea behind it: AI stops living in a separate tab and becomes a natural part of your daily workflow. That's exactly what makes it more efficient, not smarter: the same tool, better woven into how you already work.
If you built a Gem for something you repeat every week (a summary, a template, a standard reply), you don't have to do anything: the migration happens automatically starting November 17. If you haven't tried it yet, this is a good moment to think about which task at work you could turn into a one-step command.
What would be the first repetitive task you'd automate with a command like that at your job?
