AI for podiatrists: consult notes, patient materials and appointments

AI for podiatrists and foot specialists: how to use artificial intelligence to speed up consult notes, create patient education materials and organize appointments, without replacing your diagnosis.

  • Claude
  • ChatGPT

If you’re a podiatrist, your day is split between feet and paperwork. You see the patient, examine, treat, and then you have to write the note, explain the aftercare, schedule the next visit and answer questions by message. The clinical part is yours and nobody takes it from you. But the administrative part, the one that steals your time between patients, AI for podiatrists can lighten a lot.

It doesn’t come to diagnose. It comes so you spend more minutes with the patient and fewer with the notepad.

Faster consult notes

After seeing a patient, the clinical note is what piles up the most. You can dictate or type the essentials out of order (“ingrown nail first toe right foot, drained, daily dressing indicated, follow-up in two weeks”) and ask an AI like Claude or ChatGPT to turn it into a tidy, professional note with its structure.

Here’s the golden rule, and it’s not negotiable: the AI writes, you diagnose. It organizes your words, it doesn’t decide the treatment. And for privacy, don’t put names or identifying details into a common tool: work with the clinical information in general, without the “who”. Always verify what it writes before saving it to the record.

Patient education materials they actually understand

Half of a treatment’s success is the patient following through at home. And for that, they have to understand. You can ask the AI to prepare care sheets in plain language:

  • How to care for an ingrown nail after treatment.
  • Footwear tips for someone with plantar fasciitis.
  • A foot-care guide for patients with diabetes (a topic where educating saves).

You ask for the draft, review it with your judgment, add your clinic’s logo and hand it over. In minutes you have material you never had time to write before.

Patient communication without repeating yourself

The same questions as always: “can I get my foot wet?”, “how often do I change the dressing?”, “does the treatment hurt?”. You can keep saved answers, clear and friendly, drafted with the AI’s help, ready to copy and paste. And for the appointment reminder or the post-visit instruction, a warm draft in seconds.

Appointments and organization

Your schedule can be tidied with AI too. You can ask it to build an appointment confirmation message, draft a clear cancellation policy, or turn your list of follow-up patients into a table sorted by date. It doesn’t replace your booking system, but it takes the friction out of communicating and organizing.

Start with what weighs on you most

Don’t change your whole operation at once. Pick a single task: maybe the consult notes, or that care sheet you always want to give and never have ready. Try an AI this week on that task and see how much time you win back for what truly matters, which is the patient in front of you.

If I, without being in healthcare, build things with AI every day, you with your clinical knowledge can get so much out of it. Your diagnosis is still yours: the AI just helps you with the rest.
