AI for bakers and pastry chefs: scaled recipes, cost control, and digital marketing

How AI can help bakers and pastry chefs scale recipes, calculate cost per unit, plan production, and create social media content, without wasting time on administrative work.

If you run a bakery or pastry shop, or take orders from home, you know the real work happens at the oven: the texture of the brioche, the exact point of the caramel, the crunch of the puff pastry. But there’s a part of the business that is neither creative nor delicious: scaling math, cost control, and social media marketing. That’s where AI can save you hours.

Not to bake for you. To take the boring paperwork off your plate and leave you in the kitchen.

The classic problem: scaling a recipe

Imagine you perfected your butter roll recipe for 12 pieces. A client asks for 200 for an event. The question: how much of each ingredient do you need?

What takes several minutes on paper (with room for mistakes) you can hand to an AI in seconds:

“I have a recipe for 12 rolls: 200 g flour, 80 g butter, 50 ml milk, 2 eggs, 30 g sugar, 5 g salt, 7 g yeast. Scale it to 200 units.”

The AI gives you the full table, already calculated, with exact grams and milliliters. You review it, adjust if you know some ingredients don’t scale linearly (like yeast or salt), and you’re done.

Calculating cost per unit

This is one of the most tedious tasks: knowing exactly what it costs you to make one piece so you can set a fair price. With AI, you can do it like this:

  1. Give it the ingredient list with quantities and what you paid for them.
  2. Ask it to calculate raw material cost per unit.
  3. Add your packaging, gas, and electricity cost (an estimate).
  4. The AI shows you the breakdown and can help you propose a sale price with a defined margin.

That analysis you used to avoid because it took too long now takes minutes, and you can repeat it every time input prices change.

Production planning

For large orders or day-to-day operations, AI can help you organize:

  • Which products to make first (those with longer fermentation or refrigeration times)
  • When to fire up the oven to optimize gas usage
  • A shopping list organized by category from your scaled recipe

Just describe what you need to produce and ask it to help you sequence the process. It doesn’t replace your baker’s intuition, but it does structure what you already know.

Social media content without running out of ideas

Marketing on Instagram or Facebook is what many bakers least want to deal with. With AI you can generate:

  • Captions for your product photos (“Looking for something this Sunday? Our butter croissants come out fresh at 8am…”)
  • Descriptions for your digital catalog or menu
  • Ideas for themed posts (holiday season, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day)
  • Friendly responses to common questions and comments on social media

You don’t have to post whatever it generates without reviewing it: read it, adjust it to your voice, and publish. But you’re no longer starting from scratch.

What AI doesn’t do

AI can’t smell when the bread is ready. It doesn’t know when the dough is at the right point or how to adjust the oven temperature for the weather. The baker’s eye, experience, and palate are yours: that’s where your value is, and no tool can take that away.

Use it as an assistant for the business side, not as the chef.

Where to start

This week, pick a single task: the one you hate most or the one that steals the most time. It could be calculating the cost of your best-selling product, or writing three captions for your next photos.

Hand it to Claude or ChatGPT, review what it gives you, and adjust to your taste. If I can build things with AI without being a pastry chef, you with all your craft knowledge can go much further. You just have to try.
