Making a beautiful piece is only half the work. The other half is getting people to find it, understand it, and want to buy it. And that’s where many artisans get stuck — not because they don’t know their craft, but because marketing and writing aren’t their thing.
AI isn’t going to make your pieces. But it can help you present them to the world.
Descriptions that sell
How many times have you posted a photo on Instagram with no idea what to write? Ceramics have history, texture, intention. But translating that into words that hook people isn’t easy if you’re not a writer.
Describe your piece to Claude or ChatGPT: the type of clay, the technique (raku, wheel-throwing, pinch pot), the finish, the size, what it’s for. Ask for a description for Instagram, Etsy, or a product card.
“Handmade stoneware mug, cobalt blue glaze with natural variation, 300ml capacity, dishwasher safe.” AI can turn that into copy that communicates the real value of your work and makes people feel like they have to have it.
Your catalog, organized
If you work with custom orders or manage a lot of inventory, keeping track of everything is a headache. AI can help you create a template where you log each piece: name, description, materials, price, status (available, sold, custom order).
Ask it to help you structure the information and generate the template in a format you can fill in on your phone or a spreadsheet. No more keeping it all in your head.
Social media marketing without becoming an expert
Social media is an artisan’s storefront today. But posting consistently requires ideas, copy, and strategy — and that’s exhausting when all your energy goes into creating.
You can ask an AI to generate:
- A list of 10 content ideas for the coming month (creation process, behind the scenes, custom order stories, material curiosities)
- The captions for each post, ready to copy and tweak
- Relevant hashtags for your type of ceramics and your market
You don’t have to follow everything to the letter. Use what works for you and drop what doesn’t sound like you.
Responding to client messages
When someone asks about a custom order or requests a price for a piece, you need to respond well and fast. AI can help you draft clear, friendly, professional responses — especially when you don’t know how to explain why a piece takes weeks to be ready.
“A client is asking how long a custom order of 12 personalized mugs takes and how much it costs. I charge $18 per mug and delivery is 3 weeks. Write me a friendly and direct reply.”
You review, tweak if needed, and send.
The limit that matters
AI can’t replace the eye you develop over years of practice, or the decision to use one glaze over another, or the authenticity of your process. Use it for the work that drains your time and energy — not for what defines you as an artist.
Your work has value because you made it. AI just helps more people find out about it.
Start with one description
This week, pick a piece you already have and describe it to Claude or ChatGPT. Ask for an Instagram caption. See what comes out.
It might not be perfect, but it’ll be a much better starting point than a blank screen. And the best part: trying is free.
