AI for dancers and choreographers: notation, rehearsals, auditions and marketing

AI for dancers and choreographers: how to use artificial intelligence to notate choreography, plan rehearsals, prep auditions and handle digital marketing. A simple guide for the dance world.

  • Claude
  • ChatGPT

If you dance or create choreography, you know the art happens in the body, not on a screen. None of that changes. But around the dancing there’s a pile of work that isn’t dancing: writing down the sequence so you don’t forget it, juggling rehearsal schedules, prepping the audition, running your social media. There, and only there, is where AI for dancers and choreographers can take weight off your shoulders.

AI is not going to dance for you. But it can handle the paperwork so you get to stay in the studio.

What AI can do around dance

Think of AI as a production assistant that works for free at any hour. From whatever you describe to it, a modern AI can:

  • Put a sequence you have in your head into clear words, step by step
  • Organize a rehearsal plan with goals per session
  • Prep you for an audition (what to expect, how to present yourself, common questions)
  • Write your posts and captions for social media
  • Draft the description of your class or your proposal for a festival

The machine does the tedious part. The movement stays yours.

Choreographic notation in plain language

Formal dance notation (like Labanotation) is beautiful but few people master it. AI gives you a middle ground: you describe your choreography in your own words (“eight counts, turn to the right, arms up, slow drop to the floor”) and it returns it ordered, numbered and clear, ready to share with your group.

It doesn’t replace professional notation, but it’s great for not losing an idea at 2 a.m. and for helping your dancers understand the sequence without you explaining the same thing ten times.

Rehearsal plans that actually stick

A good rehearsal is planned. Tell the AI how many sessions you have, how long the piece is and where it’s weak, and it builds a realistic plan: what to work on each day, how much time to give each section and when to run the full piece.

You know your group. AI helps you order the time so it pays off.

Auditions and digital marketing

For the audition: ask it to prep you. “I’m going to a contemporary dance audition, what do they usually ask for and how do I present myself with confidence?”. It gives you a guide and even the typical questions so you arrive calm.

For digital marketing: this is where AI shines without touching your art. You ask it for content ideas, captions for your clips, the text for your page or the email to promote a show. You film and dance; it writes the boring stuff.

Start small

You don’t have to digitize your whole career tomorrow. Start with a single thing: next time you finish creating a sequence, ask an AI like Claude or ChatGPT to write it out in order for you. Or to draft the caption for your next video. See how much time you get back for the studio.

I build things with AI without being a dancer. You, with your body and your talent, can use it as a supporting tool and keep the best part for yourself: dancing. You just have to start.
