How to Create a Custom GPT Without Coding

Before opening the GPT Builder, spend 10 minutes answering these questions. Clarity here determines how useful your GPT will be:

What is the specific task it will do? A GPT is better the more specific it is. Examples that work well:

• “Draft customer email responses in my voice and tone”
• “Analyze any text and give me clarity and SEO feedback”
• “Transform my notes into draft LinkedIn posts”
• “Answer questions about my product catalog”

Avoid GPTs that “do everything” because they end up doing everything poorly.

What information does it always need to know? List everything you’d have to explain to a new assistant: your industry, your audience, your tone of voice, terms you use and terms you avoid, your products or services, work rules.

What should it never do? Define clear limits: “Don’t make pricing promises without my approval”, “Don’t use technical jargon”, “If you don’t know the answer, say so instead of making things up”.

This preparation becomes the instructions in Step 3 and is the most important part of the whole process.

1. Go to chatgpt.com and sign in with your Plus account.
2. In the left sidebar, click your username and then “My GPTs”.
3. Click the “Create GPT” button.
4. You’ll see a split screen: the Builder (editor) on the left and the Preview (chat preview) on the right.

“Create” tab (conversational mode): The Builder asks questions in chat to configure the GPT automatically. Tell it what you want:

I want a GPT that writes Instagram captions in a friendly, 
direct tone for a wellness brand called GlowUp, 
targeting women aged 25 to 40.

The Builder will generate a name, description and initial instructions. Then you can refine them in the “Configure” tab.

Switch to the “Configure” tab for full control over every field. We do that in the next step.

The “Configure” tab is where you define exactly how your GPT will behave:

Field	What to put
Name	Your GPT’s name (e.g. “GlowUp Content Writer”)
Description	One sentence about what it does (others see this if you publish to the store)
Instructions	The heart of the GPT: paste all the text you prepared in Step 1
Conversation starters	Example prompts users see when they open the GPT (optional)

How to write good instructions:

Use clear sections and direct language. The more specific, the better the result:

You are the content assistant for GlowUp, a wellness brand targeting 
women aged 25 to 40.

Tone: friendly, empowering, direct. No medical jargon or self-help clichés.

Your main task: when given a topic, generate 3 Instagram caption options 
of 150 to 250 words each. End each one with a question or clear call to action.
Include 5 to 8 relevant hashtags at the end.

Always: write in English. Use emojis only where they add value, 
not at the start of every sentence.

Never: make medical claims. Don't mention specific prices.
If you don't know something: say "I don't have that information" instead of guessing.

The most important tip: put the most critical rules at the beginning, not the end. The model gives more weight to instructions at the top of the text.

Knowledge (context files):

These are the documents your GPT can consult when responding. If someone asks for a product price, the GPT searches for the answer in the files you uploaded.

Accepted formats: PDF, TXT, DOCX, CSV, JSON (up to 20 files per GPT).

To add files:

1. On the “Configure” tab, click “Add files” under the “Knowledge” section.
2. Upload your documents.
3. Click “Update” for the GPT to index them.

What files to add (practical examples):

• PDF with your product catalog and prices
• TXT with your brand voice and tone guide
• DOCX with customer FAQs and answers
• CSV with data or updated inventory

Important tip: limit to 2 to 5 well-structured files with clear headings. More than 5 files reduces response accuracy. One organized document beats 10 scattered files.

Capabilities you can enable:

Capability	What it is for
Web browsing	The GPT can look up up-to-date information in real time
Image generation	Can create images with DALL-E within the chat
Code interpreter	Analyzes data, makes calculations, processes CSV or Excel files

Enable only the capabilities your GPT actually needs. More capabilities don’t mean a better GPT if you’re not going to use them.

The right panel shows a live preview of your GPT. Use it to test before saving:

Tests you should run:

1. Ask something it should know: if you uploaded a catalog, ask about a specific product. The GPT should answer using data from the file.
2. Ask something outside its scope: something completely foreign to its purpose. It should say it doesn’t have that information or redirect you.
3. Test the tone: ask it to draft a text and verify it sounds like you configured in the instructions.
4. Test edge cases: ambiguous questions, questions in English if your GPT is in Spanish, questions with typos.

How to improve based on results:

• If the tone is off: add concrete examples of your voice in the instructions
• If it can’t find data from the files: split the document into clearer sections with headings
• If it does things it shouldn’t: add a more specific restriction line under “Never”

Repeat the cycle: adjust instructions, test, adjust. You don’t need more than 2 to 3 rounds if you prepared Step 1 well.

When your GPT passes testing, save it and decide who can use it:

1. In the Builder, click “Save” (top right corner).
2. Choose visibility:

Option	Who can use it
Only me	Only you, in your account
Anyone with the link	Anyone with the link, including free plan users
Public (GPT store)	Appears in ChatGPT’s GPT store for anyone to find

3. If you choose “Anyone with the link”, copy the link and share it with your team or clients: they can use it even without Plus.
4. If you publish to the store, add a good description and category; that determines whether it appears in store searches.

To use it in the future:

• Go to chatgpt.com, open the sidebar and click your GPT’s name, or
• Use the direct link you saved.
• You can edit it at any time from “My GPTs” without deleting user history.

Result: an assistant ready on any device, that anyone on your team can open without needing to give context each time.
