How to Create Social Media Content with AI (Calendar, Captions and Graphics with Claude, ChatGPT and Canva)
Step-by-step guide to create social media content with AI: plan your editorial calendar, write effective captions and generate brand graphics without being a designer, using Claude, ChatGPT and Canva.
- Claude
- ChatGPT
- Canva
Creating social media content with AI is no longer just for big agencies: with Claude, ChatGPT and Canva you can have your week’s editorial calendar ready in an hour, captions ready to copy, and brand graphics generated without knowing design. In this guide I walk you through the full workflow, from planning to publishing.
Tap each step to open it and follow along at your own pace.
Before you start: knowing your audience (who you’re talking to) and your value proposition (what makes you different) before asking AI anything makes the results much better. If you haven’t defined that yet, start there.
1 Plan your editorial calendar with AI
An editorial calendar defines what you’ll post, on which network and on which day. With AI you can have a full month’s calendar in minutes.
- Open Claude (claude.ai) or ChatGPT (chatgpt.com).
- Use this prompt, adapted to your case:
I am [describe your business or project] and my audience is [describe your ideal audience].
Create an editorial calendar for Instagram (or [the network you use]) for the next 4 weeks.
Include:
- 3 posts per week
- A mix of educational, inspirational and sales content (70/20/10 ratio)
- Topic for each post and the hook (first sentence that stops the scroll)
- One weekly behind-the-scenes story
Don't write the full captions yet, just the topic and the hook.
- Review the result. Remove topics that don’t fit your brand and ask for alternatives for the ones that do: “The week 2 topic doesn’t match my style. Give me 3 alternatives focused on [your key topic]”.
- Save the calendar in a Google Doc or Notion page to use as reference when writing captions.
The 70/20/10 rule: 70% educational or entertaining content (without selling), 20% community building (questions, polls, behind-the-scenes) and 10% direct sales. This balance generates more reach and less audience fatigue.
2 Write captions for each network with AI
With the calendar ready, you now ask the AI to write the full caption for each post. The key is giving it enough context so the result sounds like you, not a robot.
Base prompt for a caption:
Write a caption for Instagram about [topic from the calendar].
My audience is [describe who you're talking to].
My tone is [direct and practical / friendly and with humor / inspirational but without clichés — whichever you use].
The hook is: "[the first sentence you already have from the calendar]".
The caption should:
- Be between 150 and 250 words
- End with a clear question or call to action
- Include 5 to 8 relevant hashtags at the end (no more)
Don't use decorative emojis at the start of every sentence. Only use them where they add value.
Captions by network: the same topic needs different formats per network.
Adapt this Instagram caption to:
1. LinkedIn: more formal, no excessive hashtags, professional tone
2. Facebook: more conversational, can be longer
3. X (Twitter): maximum 280 characters, straight to the point
[Paste the Instagram caption here]
To refine the result: if the caption sounds generic, use:
Rewrite this caption adding [a personal anecdote of mine / a statistical fact / a visual metaphor]. Make it sound more like I wrote it.

3 Create visual graphics with Canva and its built-in AI
Canva has built-in AI to generate images, remove backgrounds and create design variations. You don’t need to know design to produce consistent brand graphics.
For template-based graphics (the fastest method):
- Go to canva.com and create an account (the free plan works to get started).
- Click “Designs” and search for templates for the type of post you need: “Instagram Post”, “Instagram Story”, “LinkedIn Post”.
- Choose a template that matches your brand’s aesthetic.
- Edit the text with your post’s caption (the text you generated with Claude or ChatGPT).
- Change colors and typography to your brand’s (in the “Styles” side panel).
To generate images with AI in Canva:
- Inside a design, click “Apps” in the left panel and search for “Text to Image”.
- Describe the image you want:
[Describe the image in English for best results, e.g.:
"Flat lay of a laptop, coffee mug and notebook on a light wood desk, warm tones, minimal"]
- Choose the style (Photo, Illustration, Watercolor) and generate.
- If the image has a background you want to remove, use “Edit image” > “Remove background” (requires Canva Pro).
To maintain brand consistency:
- Save your colors and typography in the Brand Kit (Canva Pro) to apply them with one click to any template.
- Create a brand folder with the logos and elements you always use.

4 Schedule and automate your publishing
With the content ready (caption + image), the last step is scheduling posts so they go out at peak reach times, without you having to be there.
Options for scheduling:
| Tool | Free plan | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Meta Business Suite | Yes (no limit) | Instagram and Facebook: native, free scheduling |
| Buffer | Yes (3 channels, 10 posts) | Multiple networks in one place |
| Later | Yes (30 posts / month) | Instagram with grid preview |
| Canva | Yes (publish directly from Canva) | If you design there, publish from there |
Prices and limits for these tools change. Confirm current plans on their official page before deciding.
Steps to schedule in Meta Business Suite (simplest for Instagram and Facebook):
- Go to business.facebook.com and connect your Instagram and/or Facebook account.
- Click “Create post”.
- Paste the caption, upload the image from Canva and choose the publication date and time.
- Click “Schedule”.
Timing tip: post when your audience is active. To find out, check Insights on Instagram (the “Audience” section) or ask AI for an estimate:
At what times are women entrepreneurs in Latin America most active on Instagram? Give me a general recommendation by day of the week.
Remember that AI gives general estimates. Your own Instagram Insights will always be the most accurate source for your specific audience.
If something goes wrong
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| All captions sound the same and generic | Add more context about your voice in the prompt: an example of a caption you liked, so AI can imitate it |
| AI suggests topics that don’t match my brand | First define your brand’s 3 to 5 content pillars and add them to the prompt as context |
| Canva’s AI images don’t come out as expected | Describe the image in English with more details: colors, style, composition, lighting; English prompts give better results in Canva Text to Image |
| I don’t have time to do this every week | Do it in batch: a 2-hour block per month generates 12 captions and 12 graphics; then you just schedule and don’t touch it again until next month |
| My reach dropped even though I post with AI | AI doesn’t replace consistency or interaction. Reply to comments, use each network’s native features (Reels, carousels, stickers) and experiment with new formats |
Frequently asked questions
Can I create social media content with AI for free?
Yes. Claude and ChatGPT have free plans sufficient to get started: you can request a calendar and several captions without paying anything. Canva also has a free plan with many social media templates. Paid versions unlock more speed, more generations and more premium templates.
Can AI replace a community manager?
AI speeds up text and image production, but it does not replace editorial judgment, real-time comment responses or deep knowledge of your audience. Think of it as an assistant that breaks creative blocks and gives you a first draft: you refine it and add your voice.
Which social network is best to start using AI in my content?
Instagram and LinkedIn are the most rewarding for AI-generated captions because they combine text and image format. TikTok requires more originality in scripting and video editing, where AI helps less with the final result. Start with the network where you already have an audience.
How do I avoid having my captions sound AI-generated?
Tell the AI your voice in the prompt: 'Write as if it were me: I use a direct tone, with light humor, I address women entrepreneurs'. Then edit the first sentence (the one that sounds most robotic) and add an anecdote or personal detail. AI gives the skeleton; you add the personality.
Can I use Canva for free to create social media graphics with AI?
Yes, Canva's free plan gives access to thousands of social media templates and some basic AI features. The image AI (Text to Image) is available in limited form on the free plan. For Magic Eraser, background removal and more image generations, you need Canva Pro. Confirm available features at canva.com.
