| Tutorials · Beginner How to Automate Your Social Media with AI: Captions, Calendars and Scheduling with Claude, ChatGPT and BufferLearn to automate your social media with AI: generate captions, create editorial calendars and schedule posts with Claude, ChatGPT and Buffer. Save hours every week without losing authenticity.
Do you spend hours every week thinking about what to post, writing captions and trying to keep your social media active? In this tutorial you’ll learn to automate your social media with AI: a practical workflow with Claude or ChatGPT to generate content in batches and Buffer to schedule it, all without losing your voice or authenticity. Tap each step to open and follow it.
1 Design your workflowBefore automating anything, define how your process will work. The standard workflow has four stages:
Before moving to the next step, answer these questions on paper or in a document:
These answers will be the context you give AI in all the following prompts. 2 Generate captions and posts in batches with AIThe key to efficiency is generating the entire week’s or month’s content in one session, not post by post. This is where AI makes the difference. To generate a batch of posts, use this prompt:
To adapt the same content to multiple platforms in one step:
This lets you publish on 3 or 4 platforms with the effort of creating content for one. 3 Build your editorial calendarAn editorial calendar organizes what you publish, on which network and when. AI can generate it and you only need to approve it and load it into Buffer. To create the monthly calendar:
Once you have the approved calendar, save it in a spreadsheet or in Notion. Each week you take that week’s topics and generate the captions with Step 2, instead of deciding what to post each day.
4 Schedule your posts in BufferWith the content ready and approved, Buffer handles publishing it automatically at the right time.
Tip: use Buffer’s “Queue” feature. Define your posting times for each network (for example, Instagram at 9am and 6pm, LinkedIn at 8am) and Buffer automatically publishes at those times when you add posts to the queue.
The free plan allows up to 10 posts in queue per channel, enough to get started. If you publish more, the Essentials plan ($6/mo per channel, confirm at buffer.com/pricing) removes that limitation. 5 Analyze metrics and optimize with AIAutomating doesn’t mean posting blindly. Once a week, spend 20 minutes reviewing what worked and adjusting the strategy. Buffer has an Analytics panel with basic metrics for each post (reach, impressions, clicks, engagement). Export that summary and feed it to AI:
With that feedback, adjust your next content batch before generating it. In three or four weeks you’ll have a clear pattern of what works for your specific audience.
And if you want to create all the visual content with AI too, the tutorial How to create content for social media with AI covers the complete workflow including images and graphics with Canva AI. If something goes wrong
Frequently asked questionsIs Buffer completely free?Buffer has a free plan that includes up to 3 social media channels and 10 scheduled posts in queue per channel. It's enough to get started. For more channels or higher post volume, the Essentials plan costs $6/mo per channel. Confirm current details at buffer.com/pricing. Can AI post directly to my social media without my approval? Not in this workflow. Claude and ChatGPT only generate the text; you review it and schedule it in Buffer. That's the recommended approach: AI produces, you filter and approve. If you want automation without manual review, more advanced tools exist, but they require technical setup and carry the risk of posting unsupervised content. Can I automate TikTok, Instagram and LinkedIn with this same workflow?Yes. Buffer supports TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Pinterest and YouTube. AI can adapt the same content to different tones by platform (more formal for LinkedIn, more casual for TikTok) with a single prompt. Step 2 explains how to do this. How much time does automating with AI save me?Depending on how much you publish, between 3 and 8 hours a week. The biggest gain is in idea generation and caption writing: tasks that used to take 30-60 minutes per post and with AI take 5-10 minutes, including review. Do I need to know how to code to do this? No. This tutorial uses no code. Everything is done with prompts in ChatGPT or Claude and with Buffer's visual interface. If in the future you want more advanced flows (like posting automatically without approval), then you'd need tools like Make or n8n. |
