White House plans to pull its AI-testing officials from Commerce
My take: Per Reuters, citing The Information, the White House plans to move three senior officials from the Center for Advancing Innovation and Standards for Super Intelligence (CAISSI), the federal unit that tests the most advanced AI models before they reach the market, so they report directly to the White House instead of the Commerce Department.
What stands out to me is the stated reason: a White House official attributed the change to coordination problems with Commerce. When a government centralizes who evaluates the safety of the most powerful technology that exists, that is not just an administrative decision. It is a signal of how much weight it is giving that work and who controls the message.
For anyone building with AI, or relying on these evaluations being independent and trustworthy, it is worth watching closely who ends up in charge of measuring how safe these models are, right after this same office renamed itself to reflect the Super Intelligence era the government itself ordered.
How closely do you pay attention to who certifies or evaluates the AI tools you use at work every day?
