Just 5 years in, interactive chatbot platform Character.AI files for bankruptcy
My take: Character.AI, the chatbot platform once valued at over a billion dollars, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this week. Among its assets is a deal to sell its technology to Disney for $20 million, but if no serious buyer steps up, the platform will simply shut down.
What stands out to me isn't the money, it's the underlying cause. The company faced serious lawsuits after a teenager in Florida died by suicide after becoming obsessed with one of its chatbots, and Texas opened an investigation into child safety. On top of that is something every AI company eventually runs into: the cost of running large models rises with every new user, and monetizing that without sacrificing safety isn't easy.
For anyone building with AI (whether it's an app, a chatbot, or a tool for your business), this is a clear lesson: user safety, especially when minors are involved, isn't a detail you fix later. It has to be designed in from day one, alongside a real plan for how you'll sustain the business long term.
If you're building something with AI today, how prepared are you for the costs and responsibilities that come with growing fast?
