Warren McCulloch

Before modern computers existed, before "artificial intelligence" was even a phrase, Warren McCulloch was already asking the boldest questions of the human brain. This neurophysiologist, psychiatrist, and poet born in New Jersey in 1898 spent decades convinced of something his colleagues considered almost absurd: that the mind, with all its complexity, could be described with the logic of numbers. And he proved it.

In 1943, together with the young mathematician Walter Pitts, he published "A Logical Calculus of the Ideas Immanent in Nervous Activity," a paper that changed history. They proposed the first mathematical model of a neuron (now called the McCulloch-Pitts neuron): a simple binary switch, ones and zeros, capable of representing any logical function. The idea was radical: the brain wasn't magic, it was computation. That same concept is the root of every neural network that today trains a language model, recognizes your face, or translates text.

McCulloch became one of the architects of the cybernetics movement. Between 1946 and 1953 he chaired the Macy Conferences, an interdisciplinary seminar where mathematicians, biologists, psychologists, and engineers sat together to think about communication and control in animals and machines. He worked side by side with Norbert Wiener, spent his final decades at MIT, and in 1964 became the first elected president of the American Society for Cybernetics. In 1968 he received the Wiener Gold Medal, the highest recognition in the field.

What fascinates me about McCulloch is not just the technical finding, but the leap of faith it required. He believed, when almost no one else did, that intelligence could be formalized, that a thought could be written as an equation. That bet, made with pencil and paper decades before there were GPUs or datasets, is underneath every AI tool you use today.
