Emad Mostaque

Emad Mostaque did not come from the world of laboratory AI. He was an Oxford mathematician who had spent thirteen years managing hedge funds in London, and when he discovered the potential of diffusion models for generating images, he reached a conclusion few in his position would have had the courage to draw: if this technology was this powerful, the most important thing was that it not stay locked in the hands of a few. He founded Stability AI in 2020 with that idea as his compass.

On August 22, 2022, Stability AI launched Stable Diffusion completely open, code and weights included. It was the first time a high-quality image generation model had been made available for anyone to download, modify, and run on their own computer, without paying or asking permission. In less than two months, the repository accumulated over 33,000 GitHub stars. In the years that followed, Stability AI's models surpassed 100 million downloads. It was not just a tool: it was a platform that awakened an entire ecosystem of artists, developers, and creators.

Mostaque graduated in Mathematics and Computer Science from Oxford University in 2005 and worked as co-CIO of Capricorn Fund Managers before turning to AI. In March 2024 he resigned as CEO of Stability AI with an argument that turned heads: "You're not going to beat centralized AI with more centralized AI." His departure, during a turbulent period for the company, did not eclipse the real impact of what he had helped build.

To me, what remains of Emad Mostaque is not a company or a title, but a question he asked out loud when few dared: why should this technology only be accessible to those who can afford to pay for it? That question, turned into open-source code, reached the hands of illustrators in Argentina, designers in the Philippines, and artists in Nigeria before the end of 2022. Today, every time you generate an image with a tool that runs on your own machine, there is a little of that bet in the result.
