1 Create your beehiiv account

beehiiv is the platform where your newsletter lives: web pages, email sends and AI tools are all in the same place.

  1. Go to https://www.beehiiv.com and click “Get Started Free”.
  2. Sign up with your email or Google account.
  3. beehiiv will ask for your newsletter name, topic and estimated audience. Don’t worry too much, you can change everything later.
  4. Confirm your email if you receive a verification message.

When done you’ll see your beehiiv dashboard. From here you control everything.

2 Set up your newsletter (name, design and subscription page)

Before writing your first issue, lay the groundwork so your newsletter looks professional from day one.

  1. In the left menu, go to Settings.
  2. Name and description: write what your newsletter is about in one short sentence (this appears on the subscription page and email preview).
  3. Design: in the Design section you can upload your logo, choose colors and font. The free plan includes nice templates.
  4. Subscription page: beehiiv automatically creates a page at your-name.beehiiv.com. Copy it and share it with friends and contacts for your first subscribers.

If you have your own domain, you can connect it later from Settings > Domain.

3 Write your first issue with the AI assistant

This is where AI comes in: beehiiv’s editor has a built-in assistant that helps you draft, improve what you wrote and change tone with one click.

  1. In the main menu, click New Post.
  2. Write a title for your issue. Example: “3 ways AI saved me 5 hours this week”.
  3. Inside the editor, select the empty text and you’ll see a spark icon (✦) or the / shortcut to open the AI assistant.
  4. Describe what you want: “A friendly intro for my AI productivity newsletter”. The assistant generates a draft.
  5. Review the text, adjust it in your voice and add your personal examples. The draft is a starting point, not the final text.
  6. Use the additional AI options: Rewrite, Shorten, Extend or Change tone depending on what you need.

Advanced AI tools are available on paid plans (Scale and Max). On the free plan you get 10 AI credits per day (confirm limits on the official page).

To publish:

  • Click Preview to see how the email looks.
  • Then Publish to send to your subscribers or schedule it for later.
4 Set up the automatic welcome sequence

A welcome sequence is a series of emails that send automatically when someone subscribes. It’s the most valuable part of automation: you introduce your newsletter, build trust and deliver value without any manual work.

Full automations require the Scale plan ($43/mo). On the free plan you can set up a basic welcome email from Settings > Welcome Email.

To set up the basic welcome email (free):

  1. Go to Settings > Welcome Email.
  2. Enable it and write a short message: who you are, what the newsletter is about and what the subscriber can expect.
  3. Use the AI assistant in the email editor to draft a friendly message if needed.
  4. Save your changes.

To create a full sequence (Scale plan):

  1. In the left menu go to Automations.
  2. Create a new flow with the “New subscriber” trigger.
  3. Add steps: welcome email on day 1, valuable content on day 3, an invitation to reply on day 7.
  4. You can use AI to write each email in the sequence directly in the editor.
5 Get your first subscribers

A newsletter without subscribers is like a store without customers. Here are the most effective ways to start, without spending money:

  1. Share your subscription page on your social networks with an honest message: “I started a newsletter about X. If you’re interested, subscribe here”.
  2. Email friends, family and contacts who might benefit from the topic. A personal message converts better than a mass post.
