How to Write a Book with AI (From Idea to Draft)

Before writing a single word, you need clarity on three things: what the book is about, who it’s for and what changes in the reader after reading it. Open ChatGPT or Claude and use this prompt:

I'm planning to write a book. Help me clarify my idea:

Central topic: [describe in 1-2 sentences]
Who it's for: [describe your ideal reader]
What changes in the reader after reading it: [what they learn, feel or decide]

With those answers, summarize the book's value proposition in 3 clear sentences.

Read the response. If it captures what you have in mind, save it; if not, adjust the prompt until it does.

This step looks simple, but it’s the most important: a clear reader and a defined purpose make all the following steps much easier.

With the value proposition ready, ask the AI to design the complete book structure:

Based on this book value proposition: [paste the 3 sentences from step 1]

Create an outline with:
- Working title
- Introduction: what you promise the reader
- Between 8 and 12 chapters, each with: title, main subtopic and 3 key points
- Conclusion: what the reader takes away at the end

Review the outline carefully. Move chapters around, change the order, or remove what doesn’t fit. The AI proposes; you decide.

Save this outline in a text document: it’s your roadmap for the entire process.

For non-fiction books with research, you can also use NotebookLM to organize your sources before you start writing.

This is the longest step, but also the most satisfying. For each chapter, follow this flow:

1. Open a new conversation for each chapter (so the AI doesn’t lose the thread from previous ones).
2. Paste the book context and the chapter details:

I'm writing a book about [topic]. My ideal reader is [description].

Chapter [number]: [title]
Key points it must cover:
- [point 1]
- [point 2]
- [point 3]

Write a draft of 800-1000 words in my voice. Here's a sample of my writing: [paste a paragraph of yours]

3. Read the draft. Mark what you like and what you’d change.
4. Request specific adjustments: “Make the section on point 2 more practical, with a real example”.
5. Copy the revised chapter into your document.

Repeat this process for each chapter. Don’t chase perfection in this round: the goal is to have the complete draft.

With all chapters ready, AI can help you review the book’s global coherence:

Detect contradictions or repetitions: paste two chapters together and ask: “Are there any contradictions, repeated ideas or logic gaps between these two chapters?”

Improve specific paragraphs: pick a paragraph you’re not happy with and ask: “Rewrite this to be clearer and more direct, without changing the meaning”.

Review the book arc: paste the introduction and conclusion and ask: “Does the book deliver on the promise made in the introduction? Is the tone consistent throughout?”

Important: fine-style correction, proofreading and the final editorial pass still require the human eye (and ideally a trusted beta reader). AI can miss subtle errors that a human reader catches immediately.

You're my editorial assistant. I'm going to write a [fiction / non-fiction] book about [topic].
My ideal reader is [description]. The book promises [what changes in the reader].

Step 1: Give me a working title and a 10-chapter outline with key points for each.
When I approve it, continue to step 2.
Step 2: Write the Chapter 1 draft in 800 words, in the tone of this example: [paste a paragraph of yours]

That way you see the full outline before entering the content and can reorient the structure without having written anything yet.
