| Tutorials · Beginner How to create a business metrics dashboard with AI: connect data, visualize KPIs and automate reports without codingCreate a business metrics dashboard with AI step by step: connect Google Sheets, visualize KPIs and automate reports without coding.
If you run your business with spreadsheets and spend hours every week copying numbers into a report, this guide is for you. You’ll learn to create a business metrics dashboard with AI using Google Data Studio (free) and Claude or ChatGPT to interpret data, visualize your KPIs and automate reports, all without writing code. Tap each step to open and follow it at your own pace.
1 Open Google Data Studio and create your first reportGoogle Data Studio (also known as Looker Studio until 2026) is Google’s free tool for building dashboards connected to your data.
2 Connect your data sourcesWhen you create the report, Data Studio will ask you to choose a data source. The most common ones for small businesses: Google Sheets (easiest):
Google Analytics (if you have a website):
For external sources (Facebook Ads, HubSpot, Shopify): Use a third-party connector like Supermetrics or Funnel.io; some have a cost. Confirm prices on the official page of each connector.
If you have your data in spreadsheets and want to analyze it with AI before connecting, check the tutorial How to use AI in Google Sheets to automate analysis and generate reports. 3 Design the dashboard: add KPIs and chartsWith data connected, you can build the dashboard. Use the “Insert” menu to add elements: KPI cards (scorecard):
Line chart (evolution over time):
Data table (detail):
Date filter:
4 Use AI to interpret your metricsThis is where AI becomes your personal analyst. You have two ways to use it: Option A: Export and paste data into Claude or ChatGPT
Option B: Upload a CSV to ChatGPT Plus (Code Interpreter)
5 Automate the weekly reportThe last step is having the report arrive on its own, without you having to remember to send it. Schedule the send from Data Studio:
For more complex reports with AI included: You can combine Google Sheets, Make.com and Claude so the report includes not just the numbers but also an AI-written summary. Learn how in the tutorial How to automate marketing reports with ChatGPT.

Frequently asked questionsDo I need to know how to code to create a dashboard with AI?No. Google Data Studio and the AI tools in this guide are fully visual: you connect your sources, drag the charts and you're done. No code required. Is Google Data Studio free?Yes, it's 100% free. It was previously called Looker Studio; Google brought back the Data Studio name in 2026, but the product is the same and remains free. Native Google connectors (Sheets, Analytics, Ads) are free; some third-party connectors for Facebook Ads or HubSpot have an extra cost. What's the difference between a dashboard and a report?A report is a static snapshot of a period (PDF or spreadsheet). A dashboard is dynamic: it updates automatically when new data comes in and you can filter by date, product or campaign in real time. How does AI help interpret the data? You paste the numbers into ChatGPT or Claude and ask them to explain what's going up, what's going down and what action they recommend. With ChatGPT Plus you can also upload a CSV and the data analysis feature generates charts and insights automatically. Can I share the dashboard with my team or client?Yes. In Google Data Studio you can share the link (view or edit) or publish it as a webpage. Anyone with the link sees it in real time without needing a Google account. |
