How to Activate Voice Mode in ChatGPT
Learn how to activate voice mode in ChatGPT on iPhone, Android and browser. Step-by-step guide for Advanced Voice Mode, differences between free and Plus plans.
- ChatGPT
ChatGPT’s voice mode lets you talk to the AI directly, like calling someone. In this tutorial you will see how to activate voice mode in ChatGPT step by step, on iPhone, Android or from the browser, and what the difference is between the free and paid version.
Tap each step to open it and follow it.
Before you start: you need a ChatGPT account (chatgpt.com) and the app installed on your phone, or use the website from a modern browser. Your device’s microphone must be working.
1 Update the ChatGPT app to the latest version
Advanced Voice Mode requires the most recent version of the app. If you have an older version, the icon may not appear or the feature may not work.
On iPhone:
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your profile photo (top right).
- Scroll down to find ChatGPT and tap Update if available.
On Android:
- Open Google Play Store.
- Tap the profile icon (top right).
- Go to Manage apps and devices and update ChatGPT if an update is pending.
In the browser (computer or mobile): You do not need to install anything. Go to chatgpt.com directly. Voice mode works from Chrome, Safari and Edge with a connected microphone.
2 Grant microphone permission to ChatGPT
Without microphone permission, voice mode cannot work. If you already granted it before, skip to step 3.
On iPhone:
- Go to system Settings (the gray gear icon).
- Scroll down and tap ChatGPT.
- Toggle Microphone on.
On Android:
- Go to system Settings.
- Tap Apps (or Applications), find ChatGPT.
- Go to Permissions and enable Microphone.
- Choose “Allow only while using the app”.
In the browser: When you activate voice mode for the first time, the browser will ask for permission automatically. Tap Allow. If you blocked it before: in Chrome, click the lock icon in the address bar and change the microphone permission to “Allow”.
3 Open a chat and tap the waveform icon
- Open the ChatGPT app (or go to chatgpt.com in the browser).
- Start a new chat or open an existing one.
- In the text bar at the bottom, look for the waveform icon (it looks like wavy lines or a microphone, depending on the version). It is in the bottom-right corner of the message bar.
- Tap it (or click it from the browser).
If this is your first time using Advanced Voice Mode, the app may ask you to choose from 9 available voices: Arbor, Breeze, Cove, Ember, Juniper, Maple, Sol, Spruce and Vale. You can change the voice later in settings. None is “better” than the others: it is just personal preference.
The screen will switch to a listening mode. When you see the waves moving, ChatGPT is listening.
4 Start talking: your first voice conversation
When the screen enters listening mode, speak naturally. You do not have to shout or get too close to the microphone. ChatGPT detects when you stop talking and responds automatically.
To pause or interrupt: tap the screen once while ChatGPT is speaking. You can take the floor again immediately.
To end the voice session: tap the close button (X) or the text icon to return to normal text chat.
Tips for the first time:
- Speak in the language you want it to respond in. If you say “Hola, quiero practicar inglés contigo”, ChatGPT will understand and switch to English.
- You can mix languages in the same session if you ask for it.
- If there is background noise, quality drops slightly, but the model handles moderate ambient noise well.
Free plan limit: you have 15 minutes per day of Advanced Voice Mode. When the limit is approaching, the app notifies you. Afterwards it reverts to standard voice mode (less natural, but still works). Confirm current limits at chatgpt.com/pricing.
5 Adjust voice settings to your preference
You can customize the voice experience from the app settings:
How to access voice settings:
- Tap your profile photo (or the hamburger icon) in the top-left corner.
- Go to Settings.
- Look for Voice.
What you can change:
- Response voice: choose from the 9 options (Arbor, Breeze, Cove, Ember, etc.). You can listen to a sample before confirming.
- Response speed: on some devices you can tell ChatGPT directly to speak more slowly: “Please speak more slowly.”
- Recognition language: on Android, make sure your keyboard language includes the language you will be speaking.

Shortcut: what to say in the first 30 seconds
If you do not know how to start, use these phrases when you activate voice mode:
For English practice:
“Hi! I want to practice my English. I’m an intermediate Spanish speaker. Let’s have a casual conversation. If I make grammar mistakes, let me know at the end.”
For conversing in Spanish:
“Hola, quiero practicar conversación en español. Hazme preguntas sobre mi día y corrige mis errores cuando termines de responder.”
For preparing for a meeting or interview:
“I have a work meeting in English tomorrow about [topic]. Let’s do a role play of that meeting. You are a colleague and I am the presenter. You start.”
For everyday use:
“Tell me something interesting about [a topic you like]. I just want to listen and then ask you questions.”
If something goes wrong

Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT's voice mode free?
