Microsoft and Meta Steer Staff From Anthropic Claude to In-House AI

My take: Microsoft cut by a third the roughly $1 billion it planned to spend this year on Anthropic's technology, and Meta reduced the number of employees using Claude Code from 60,000 to 30,000, pushing them toward its own tools (Muse Code and MetaCode for Meta, GitHub Copilot for Microsoft). This isn't a story about who's "winning" the AI race. It's a story about something every business should be doing regularly: reviewing how much it spends on AI tools and whether that spending still makes sense.

Both companies have the scale and the engineering teams to build their own alternative, so the move pays off for them. Most businesses aren't in that position, and that's the real lesson: whether to build your own AI tool or keep paying for one that already exists depends on your size, your budget, and how critical that tool is to your daily operation. It's not a one-time decision, it's something worth revisiting every few months, because the market and the pricing keep changing fast.

It's worth remembering that Claude still accounts for 43.5% of U.S. business AI spending as of July this year, so this reads more like a budget adjustment from two large clients than a sign the market is turning its back on it.

If your business pays for several AI subscriptions, when was the last time you checked whether each one still gives you the return you expected?
