Former FTC Chair Lina Khan says AI self-regulation 'has been a proven failure'

My take: Former Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan said something worth paying attention to: "self-regulation efforts by big tech have been a proven failure," and "Congress needs to legislate." She said it about the voluntary pact several AI companies signed at the White House to police themselves, comparing AI to other transformative technologies the US does regulate, like railroads, pharmaceuticals and nuclear power.

You don't have to take a political side to keep the underlying point: a promise a company makes to itself, with no outside party checking whether it's kept, isn't the same as a rule with real consequences. For anyone running a business or using third-party AI tools, that means there's still no legally guaranteed floor, and the job of demanding transparency keeps falling on each client, each company and each user.

Until that clarity comes from government, the practical question is this: if you use AI at work, do you actually know what safety controls the tool you picked has, or are you trusting that "someone else" already checked?
