The Fable 5 ban unintentionally accelerated the rise of open-weight AI models
My take: When the US government shut down Fable 5 and Mythos 5 on June 12, four open-weight models appeared within days to fill the gap: North Mini Code, Kimi K2.7-Code, and Zhipu's GLM 5.2 arrived nearly simultaneously, some already in the pipeline, others clearly sped up. CNBC and Fortune's read is straightforward: the ban showed global companies that depending on a model a government can shut off with one order is a real risk. Demand for models that run on your own infrastructure is climbing.
