Thomas Wolf

There's a kind of courage that isn't about fighting someone bigger, but about deciding that a door others keep closed should be open to everyone. Thomas Wolf, a physicist and patent attorney turned AI scientist, made that choice when he co-founded Hugging Face in 2016 alongside Clément Delangue and Julien Chaumond. And he acted on it with a tool that today is as fundamental to AI developers as a toolbox is to a carpenter: the Transformers library, released in 2019.

Before Transformers, using a cutting-edge language model meant wading through dense research papers, setting up complex environments, and having access to resources few institutions could afford. Wolf and his team changed that: with a single line of Python code, any developer anywhere in the world could load BERT, GPT-2, or T5 and start building. The library was downloaded billions of times and became the field's de facto standard. But that wasn't enough for Wolf: in 2021 he organized BigScience, a year-long collaborative effort with over 1,000 researchers from 60 countries, which in 2022 produced BLOOM, the first truly open, multilingual large language model with full transparency around its training process.

His path doesn't follow a straight line. He studied statistical physics at Pierre and Marie Curie University (now Sorbonne) and then specialized as a European patent attorney, advising deep learning startups before making the full pivot to research. That combination, the mind of a physicist, the precision of a jurist, and the vision of a builder, defines how he thinks about models: with rigor, with openness, and with the constant question of whether these tools truly benefit the people who need them most.

What strikes me most about Thomas Wolf isn't the scale of what he built, but the premise from which he built it: that AI shouldn't be a privilege. Every time you open Claude, use an open-source model, or experiment with some new tool, there's a very good chance Hugging Face, Transformers, or BLOOM were part of the path. Wolf didn't invent the Transformer, that was Vaswani and his team. But he made sure you could actually use it.
